Adventure 2/1/2011

This weeks adventure was with Sula, Rua and Fozzy at the beach. We walked
from Pine Point to Old Orchard Beach. This was perhaps the coldest adventure
day yet, complete with snow and an icy ocean breeze. The dogs didn’t seem
to mind the cold however, and thankfully they stayed out of the water! I
think they enjoyed running in the sand and not having to worry about snow
sticking to their paw pads. Sula has really taken to Fozzy and they spent a
lot of time chasing each other around. Rua spent a lot of time barking at me
because she wanted me to throw things for her to fetch. Whenever we are near
water, she is very insistant that we play fetch. So since this entire
adventure was along water, it was very noisy indeed! Rua redisovered rocks
however, and would dig them up and gingerly drop them in front of me to
throw for her. She loves playing fetch! Fozzy noticed that Rua and I were
having fun with rocks and tried to get in on the action, but Rua is not a
fan of competition and they would wrestle over the rocks.
Eventually Fozzy gave up and started running around with Sula. Rua was happy
again because she had me and my rock throwing arms all to herself.

It was another snowy adventure for the pack this week. Bodie, Tika, Kelley,
Sula and Rua have happily accepted Fozzy the goldendoodle pup into their
gang. This week we went to the Fore River Sanctuary. Sula was especially
excited about the snow today and was rarely seen on the trail. She preferred
to bound through the snow like a snowshoe hare.
Fozzy is getting along well with all the dogs. He has been flirting and
wrestling wtih Tika and Kelley, chasing Sula (Sula begs him to), and
competing over sticks with Bodie. Rua spent her adventure sniffing around
and wrestling with Tika and Kelley. At one point while Rua was wrestling
Tika, Tika was so covered wtih snow that she looked like a new dog! They
seem to enjoy their snowy adventures!

What a beautiful morning for Adventure! We had Bodie, Kelley, Tika, Isaac and our trustee pack leader Kate. We went to Fuller Farm in Scarborough and headed straight through the field directly into the woods. The woods were silent and snow was falling heavily. It blanketed everything in white, creating the perfect winter wonderland. The dogs enjoyed blasting through all the fresh powder and landing in soft snow drifts when they wrestled. The dogs helped Kate find some open water of a stream so they could drink some water and snack on some dried fruit and veggie dog trail mix that was home made for them Once we finally made it to the car the pups all cuddled in the back and passed out like puppies on their way home.

Today’s adventure was at Hinkley Park in South Portland with Bodie, Tika, Kelley, Sula and Rua. Pack leader Jasmin was very happy to be back outside with the gang after taking a short break during her first trimester of pregnancy. Even though it was quite cold today, the sun was out and the dogs were having a blast. They had a blast running along the icy trails, and had fun playing/sliding on the frozen lake. They were quite a site to see because all of them kept rolling on their backs whenever they got out far on to the ice. They met lots of other dogs at the park today, which was very exciting for everyone! They were very accepting of the new members that temporarily joined their pack. Overall, it was a great winter adventure day.

Today we took Bodie, Tika, Kelly, Rua, Sula, and newby adventurer Fozzy to play in the snow on the Presumscot River Trail in Portland. It was a snowy January morning, with the quiet peace of the forest trail interupted only by Rua’s barking at us for sticks! She managed to help us find a few to toss, excavating through an impressive amount of snow!

Everyone loved the new guy; Fozzy is a natural adventurer! Whether he was chasing Sula, wrestling with Bodie or being chased by the tag team Tika and Kelly he was delighted to join the pack! We followed the trail along the river all morning, occasionally stopping to pause and make puppy snow angels and chase sticks. By the time we hiked back to our cars, we were leading a pack of sleepy, snowcovered dogs!

I took Sula and Rua to the Evergreen Cemetary and we had a blast. We found lots of new trails there that we hadn’t been on before, so they had a lot of fun exploring. We also played fetch in the field and of course enjoyed treats.

This week we had adventure at the Riverside Trolley Park with Rua, Sula, Bodie, Tika, Kelley and little Ruby. Except for the occasional drizzle, it was a beautiful autumn day, and sometimes it was hard to differentiate the dogs from the colorful forest floor. Despite the cool temperatures, the golden retrievers still enjoyed jumping in the river occasionally. We mostly played fetch on dry land though, and they all had lots of fun sliding and digging around in the fallen leaves.

This week Bodie, Tika, Kelly and Rua adventured to the Falmouth Forest Preserve. The dogs loved running through the colorful leaves that illuminated the forest floor. They enjoyed swimming in the cool, slow moving river water as they competed for sticks and tennis balls that we threw in various directions. Bodie and Rua were especially fond of carrying around really large sticks this week. They found several super gigantic sticks that they somehow managed to pick up and maneuver through the trails. Bodie seemed to get enjoyment from hitting Jasmin in the backside with one such large stick, as he menacingly ran back and forth along the trail with it and managed to hit her each time. Tika and Kelley (and sometimes Rua) enjoyed many a wrestling match, after which they would both rub around the grass down hill sides. They were funny to watch, but would get really filthy by the end of their rolling sessions, so we guided everyone back to the river for more swim time.

After missing my adventure for the first time last week due to being sick, I was excited to see the gang this week. Kate is on vacation so I did adventure alone, with the company of my Mom and her 3 dogs. So this week on adventure I had Bodie, Tika, Kelley, Sula, Rua, Socks (rat terrier), Bandit (mini dachshund) and Sammy (dachshund). We went to Pine Point beach and walked all the way to the pier in Old Orchard Beach…it was quite the trek! The dogs didn’t mind the long distance of course, they loved it! On the way down the beach, Rua was excited to be near water, but was confused about the lack of sticks. She spent a long time bouncing beside me, barking eagerly. Eventually my mom and I started throwing pieces of drift wood and smooth shells, which they all enjoyed chasing. Luckily, part way through the walk Bodie discovered a ball and the remainder of adventure was spent playing fetch as we made our way up and down the beach. Tika loves chasing after birds, and is really cute when she stalks them slowly before she runs towards them at a sprint. Rua discovered her love of sniffing beach debris and spent a lot of time nosing through seaweed and driftwood. Bodie is the ball king and retrieved the ball about 80% of the time it was thrown. The other percent was surprisingly Tika, who usually isn’t the boldest (but very sweet). She was always so proud when she ran back and showed me that she had the ball this time. Sula was excited to meet Socks because socks was up to the task of chasing her around. Kelley had a well-rounded adventure of sometimes chasing birds, sometimes playing with the dachshunds, sometimes trying to catch the ball, and a lot of times wrestling with her sister, Tika. All the dogs loved splashing around in the shallows and were quite exhausted by the time we got back to the car to go home. It was a great autumn adventure!
